Bathhouse, Breathwork, Brainwaves, and Your Body

Honouring Nature's Elements for Deep Recovery

In today’s fast-paced world, our bodies often carry the weight of stress, tension, and fatigue. To find balance and rejuvenation, many are turning to ancient practices rooted in the elements of nature. At Nature’s Energy, we combine the transformative power of the Nordic Cycle and breathwork to help you reset, recover, and recharge. By blending heat, cold, and conscious breathing, we tap into your body’s innate healing abilities while harmonising with the natural forces that surround us.

The Nordic Cycle: Sauna, Cold Plunge, and Recovery

The Nordic Cycle, an age-old practice, involves moving through cycles of intense heat, cold exposure, and rest. This routine, consisting of 2-3 rounds, begins with 15 minutes in the sauna, followed by a 1-2 minute cold plunge, and ends with 10-15 minutes of rest. It’s a full-body experience, engaging both physical and mental strength as you surrender to the contrasting forces of heat and cold.

The Sauna: Warming Your Core with Fire

The sauna represents the element of fire, enveloping you in warmth that penetrates deep into your muscles, increasing circulation and stimulating detoxification. During this phase, heat shock proteins (HSPs) are activated in the body. These proteins play a crucial role in protecting cells from stress, supporting protein repair, and enhancing longevity. As your core temperature rises, blood vessels dilate, promoting relaxation while flushing out toxins.

Breathwork in the Sauna: Use Box Breathing in the sauna—a simple but effective technique to maintain a calm, steady state. Inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, exhale for 4 seconds, and hold again for 4 seconds before repeating. This technique helps regulate your heart rate and control your body’s response to heat, while releasing tension and toxins.

Cold Plunge: Embracing the Element of Water

Next comes the invigorating cold plunge. The element of water, in its coldest form, awakens your senses, jolting your system into alertness and increasing focus. Cold exposure releases cold shock proteins, aiding in muscle recovery, reducing inflammation, and enhancing your immune response. It also stimulates norepinephrine production, which improves mood, mental clarity, and focus.

Breathwork in the Cold: Before stepping into the cold plunge, take a few deep breaths and then exhale fully. Enter the water with empty lungs to avoid the stress reflex of gasping. Once in, breathe through the nose and exhale slowly through pursed lips, like blowing through a straw. This helps regulate your body’s response to the cold, keeping you calm and grounded.

Recovery: Grounding and Integration

The final phase of the cycle is rest—a time to ground yourself and allow your body to recalibrate. This is where the true magic happens: your body moves into repair mode, lowering cortisol levels and rebalancing energy. The element of earth represents stability and provides a chance for your mind to integrate the benefits of the contrasting phases. Let your body come back to its regular temperature naturally to extend the time that cold shock proteins remain active, further enhancing recovery.

Breathwork: Unlocking Your Brainwaves

After completing the Nordic Cycle, we transition into a dedicated breathwork session, taking advantage of your heightened state of relaxation. Breathwork is not just about breathing; it’s about tapping into the subtle rhythms of your body and brain.

Your brain operates across several frequency bands, each associated with different states of consciousness. Through breathwork, we can shift our brainwaves into states of focus, creativity, meditation, and deep relaxation:

  • Beta Waves (14-30 Hz): These dominate during active thought and alertness. Modern life often keeps us in this high-energy state, leading to mental fatigue.
  • Alpha Waves (8-13 Hz): When you relax with your eyes closed, you enter the alpha state. This is where creativity and daydreaming occur.
  • Theta Waves (4-8 Hz): During breathwork, we aim to bring you into theta, a state of deep relaxation and intuitive thinking.
  • Delta Waves (0.5-4 Hz): Delta brainwaves dominate during deep sleep and are associated with cellular healing and immune function, making them crucial for recovery.

The bathhouse and breathwork process helps you access delta waves, encouraging deep sleep and physical recovery. By syncing your breath with natural rhythms, you open the door to profound calmness and healing.

Your Healing and Harmony with Nature's Elements

The blend of sauna, cold plunge, rest, and breathwork is a profound way to reset both body and mind. At Nature’s Energy, we honour the elements of nature—fire, water, and earth—to guide you through a holistic experience. By engaging in the Nordic Cycle and conscious breathwork, you enhance your physical recovery while aligning with the deeper frequencies of your mind.

Your breath is the bridge between these elements, guiding you from the heat of the sauna to the chill of the plunge and into the depths of meditation. This process encourages the slow delta brainwaves most associated with deep, restorative sleep, allowing your body to heal fully.
